Innovating for Equity: Investing in Emerging Leaders of Color

At Open Horizon, we believe that experiential learning is a powerful driver of both personal growth and social change.

Yet, we also recognize that access to these transformative opportunities has not been equitable. Systemic barriers and bias continue to limit access for students of color, particularly those from under-resourced communities, to the kinds of professional experiences that can shape their future careers and leadership journeys.

That’s why we intentionally invest in fellowship opportunities in partnership with mission-aligned organizations, with a focus on creating access for emerging leaders of color who may not otherwise have these opportunities. These fellowships help early-career professionals gain meaningful experience in their field of interest from justice and education to financial empowerment and the arts—while also ensuring they are supported, seen, and valued along the way.

Our model is rooted in collaboration:

  • Partner organizations lead the recruitment, onboarding, and management of the fellowship experience, ensuring alignment with their mission and team culture.
  • Open Horizon provides funding support and access to ongoing professional development opportunities, creating a holistic experience that supports fellows’ long-term growth and impact.

As our fellowship program has grown, so have our partnerships. Our inaugural fellowship with the Council for Court Excellence (CCE) has expanded to two fellows. We now support fellowships with DC Justice Lab, DC Affordable Law Firm , Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA), and Second Stage Theater, and we proudly provide funding for the American Indian College Fund Financial Fellowship Program. We are excited to share soon who our newest fellowship partner will be!

These partnerships reflect our deep commitment to equity, innovation, and community. By investing in emerging leaders, and the organizations that guide them, we are strengthening the pipeline of diverse talent and at the same time amplifying the impact of our partners across sectors.

How might your organization help shape the next generation of leaders while advancing your mission?
