Accountability to Change Systems the OH Way

At Open Horizon, accountability isn’t a task we check off, it’s something we live and practice every day.

It shows up in how we show up: rooted in equity, community, innovation, and integrity. When we say we’re committed to systemic change, we mean we’re committed to staying in relationship, sharing power, and doing the work alongside our partners to create lasting change.

We know that real change takes more than good intentions. It takes time, trust, and the courage to acknowledge and address the deep-rooted inequities that shape our world. Whether we’re working in economic justice, education justice, or health justice, we hold ourselves accountable to the people and communities most impacted.

We don’t do this work with a scarcity mindset. We can’t. We invest beyond the required 5% because we believe meaningful transformation needs more. More trust, more flexibility, more resources. More love. We lead with generosity, not by gatekeeping.

Our approach is relational philanthropy. That means we build real, honest relationships with our nonprofit partners. We listen. We collaborate. We see our partners not just as grantees, but as co-creators and teachers. And we’re intentional about creating space for them to thrive not just get by.

For us, accountability also means being willing to challenge the way things have always been done. We ask hard questions, stay curious, and move with integrity. That means decisions guided by community wisdom and data, and a deep commitment to doing what’s right—even when it’s uncomfortable.

We’re learning, unlearning, and evolving. That’s what accountability looks like at Open Horizon. It’s not a one-time promise. It’s a way of being, grounded in our values and driven by a collective vision for healing, justice and liberation.
