Our Mission

Our Mission and Vision

We established Open Horizon because there are too many people and organizations who are limited not by their own ability or choices but by the opportunity to excel. Whether they are held back due to structural racism, poverty, geographic limitations, economic inequality, lack of support, or any number of issues, we seek to expand opportunities for success by removing obstacles. The goal is to open their horizon and ultimately change their story.

People who connect with our vision and values recognize that equal opportunity is a desirable concept but not a reality. Open Horizon seeks to level the playing field. Through policy advocacy, educational opportunities, and support for programs that open possibilities to those who would not otherwise have them, Open Horizon seeks to improve lives, expand learning, and develop leadership skills.

Our vision is of a world where open horizons are available to all, where access to education and economic opportunity are within reach.

Our Core Values

Open Horizon is committed to advancing the values of opportunity and equity. We seek to create the conditions and opportunities for individuals, communities, and systems to advance in ways that ensure equitable access to education, experience, and economic support.

We are connected to our Jewish heritage and seek to remain aligned with the values of our forebears, pursuing what is fair and morally right, and living up to the ethical call of contributing to the work of tikkun olam, to heal the world. From Judaism’s Pirkei Avot, or the Chapters of the Fathers, we respond to the message, “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it (2:21).”

As Open Horizon, in support of OPPORTUNITY and EQUITY, we are committed to:

  • INNOVATION as a way to find new and creative ways of doing things,
  • energizing LEADERSHIP as a way of motivating others to achieve a common purpose,
  • EFFECTIVENESS by producing intended results,
  • promoting IMPACT as a way of achieving lasting and positive change in our communities—local, national, and global.
