Supporting Greatest MINDS

Open Horizon proudly recognized 8/28/2023 with a donation to Greatest MINDS, a non-profit organization that works with college students and young professionals to become the next generation of civic leaders through mentoring, volunteering and participating.

Monday was a special day with immense cultural meaning and Black History; as it falls near the end of August’s #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, described here https://lnkd.in/g2bJtq9M, our foundation was inspired to support a mission-aligned organization, and one that explicitly advances the opportunities of Black folx and BIPOC.

The end of the article in Essence highlights a giving day that many foundations honor and the reason that they give on 8/28.
“’… to promote financial support for Black-led and Black-benefiting grassroots organizations.’ The date on which #Give828 occurs ‘has a special significance for the Black community in the United States: [on] August 28, 1955…Emmett Till’s murder ignited the Civil Rights Movement; [on] August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, [delivered his] ‘I have a dream’ [speech] in Washington D.C.; [on] August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated disproportionately the New Orleans Black residents; [and on] August 28, 2008, Senator Barack Obama accepted nomination for presidency.”

Open Horizon recognizes the invaluable mentorship and advancement work that Greatest MINDS continues to evolve across its years of operation. Greatest MINDS has a vision for the 21st century where skilled, educated Black professionals will take leadership in their communities and careers by supporting high school students on their road to college and beyond. The Non-profit organization works with college students and young professionals to become the next generation of civic leaders through mentoring, volunteering and participating. The organization has imprints in Boston and Atlanta and is guided by founder, convener, educator, activist, George (Chip) Greenidge Jr.

Join us in celebrating #BPM, recognizing 8/28, and amplifying the powerful principles that Greatest MINDS is centering. Learn more about Greatest MINDS on their website at https://www.gminds.org/
